Education in painting brings that esthetic to all of my photographic work. Exploring the inability of women to see beauty in themselves, the intimate connection of women and fabric, and the strength of memory gives this project its purpose.
This series interests me as it addresses assumptions and accepted beliefs regarding women in our culture. Rejected as craft, the use of fabric has been negatively portrayed as “women’s work” in art history. Fabric has been used to cover, beautify and objectify women and it is these notions that my photographs address.
Each item was chosen by the individual for it's personal meaning. The subjects wrap their hair in the material the way they might when using a towel after a shower. The memory in the fabric and its touch affects their demeanor.
A simple paragraph about the material and its meaning becomes the basis for each title.
